Leaks
Unusually high usage? Read our suggestions on how to detect a leak.
Average water usage per person is approximately 50 gallons per day or 1.5 thousand gallons per month. If you use more than this amount, perhaps a leak is responsible. The following suggestions will help you check your property for a leak:
1.) Turn off all taps and water appliances. Read your meter before you go to bed, and again in the morning. If you have not used any water through the night, the meter should read the same. If the reading has changed, you may have a leak.
2.) Check for dripping faucets, leaking valves/pipes, hot water heaters, outside hoses/faucets.
3.) It is not unusual for a leaking toilet to lose up to 10 gallons an hour. To check for a leak in your toilet place several drops of food coloring in tank. Don’t flush the toilet for at least an hour. If the coloring goes into the bowl, or disappears completely you have a leak in your toilet. Toilets can have silent leaks that are not always noticeable. Repairing a leaking toilet may be as simple as adjusting the equipment in the tank.
